Cambridge sits on the south bank of the Choptank River, where Route 50 crosses on the long Malkus Bridge. High Street runs down to Long Wharf Park and the Choptank River Lighthouse replica, past some of the oldest homes on the Eastern Shore. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is just south. I’m Evan Weissman. I buy Cambridge houses for cash as-is, and I list them too.

Old Homes and Low Ground

Cambridge has historic homes along High Street and Water Street, some from the 1700s and 1800s, plus older frame houses and rowhomes throughout the city, and ranchers and newer subdivisions on the edges. Many of the older houses need roofs, foundations, wiring and plumbing. Some have been empty or rented for a long time.

Much of Cambridge sits close to sea level. Higher tides and storms push water into low streets, and flood insurance is a big factor for buyers in mapped flood zones. Tell me if water has reached your house, and I’ll factor it in.

I’ll look at almost any house: single-family, townhome, row, twin, or multi-family, any age, any condition, any situation.

City Taxes, History and the Critical Area

Inside city limits, Cambridge charges a property tax of 0.80 per $100, with a lower county rate, per SDAT’s 2026-27 table. Lots within about 1,000 feet of tidal water fall in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, which limits clearing and building near the shoreline.

The Harriet Tubman Museum downtown and the Tubman visitor center in nearby Church Creek draw visitors, and the waterfront has seen new investment. That helps updated homes. For houses needing heavy work, the buyer pool is smaller, which is where a cash sale helps most.

Out in the county, past Church Creek and toward the marshes, there are older homes on big lots with wells, septic systems and long gravel lanes. Those take longer to sell with a listing, and I buy them too.

Dorchester County Records

The Dorchester Register of Wills is in the courthouse at 206 High Street in Cambridge. The county tax sale was May 19 in 2026 per SDAT. Dorchester charges a 0.75% transfer tax and recordation of $5.00 per $500.

Three Ways to Sell

Option 1: I buy it as it is, flood history and all

No repairs, showings or cleanout. I don’t charge a commission, and you pick the settlement date.

Option 2: List it with me as your agent

Updated homes near the water and downtown can draw interest. Listing costs a commission and time, so I’ll show you both nets.

Option 3: Renovate and Sell Together

Where it fits, Evan can handle and pay for the updates under a written agreement, then sell on the open market. The cost of that work is repaid at settlement. You keep ownership until the sale. There is no guaranteed sale price or profit. Review any agreement with your own attorney before you sign.

I renovate most houses I buy with my own crew, and if I partner with another local buyer on yours, I’ll tell you before you sign.

Side-by-side paths: cash offer vs listing in Maryland.

Behind on Mortgage Payments

If you are behind on your mortgage or facing foreclosure, start with free help before you decide anything. A HUD-approved housing counselor costs nothing and can walk you through options with your servicer, such as catching up, a repayment plan, forbearance, or a loan modification. The Maryland HOPE hotline, 1-877-462-7555, connects homeowners with those counselors. If you have court papers or a sale date, I also recommend talking with a Maryland attorney. I can’t promise to stop a foreclosure, and I won’t pressure you. If you and your counselor decide a sale makes sense, I’ll put a cash number next to a listing plan so you can compare.
